This deadline was pushed back several decades due to numerous technical and organisational difficulties. This commissioning deadline must be consolidated owing to the need to repeat the studies already carried out. In a few years’ time, CEA plans to lift the first drum for retrieval and packaging. Retrieval and packaging of all solid waste, fuels and irradiated fuels and radioactive sources 40 pits zone – Removal of stored irradiated waste (end scheduled for 2030) • The removal from storage of blocks 108 and 116 was completed in 2022, and the removal from storage of the spent fuel in the pool was completed in 2024. CEA has also completed the removal from storage of the main sources in building 116. • With regard to the removal from storage of irradiated waste, in view of the many technical and organisational difficulties, the initial deadlines were postponed for several years. EDF OPERATION AND DESCRIPTION CHALLENGE NEXT KEY STEPS ASNR OBSERVATIONS Decommissioning of the reactor vessel “Pilot” project for the decommissioning of the other GCRs • Opening of pressure vessel and installation of the decommissioning platform • Decommissioning of the graphite stack • Removal of the fuel from the facility has significantly reduced the risks. The facility has moreover already been partly decommissioned. • ASNR will take a position statement on the deadlines presented by EDF for decommissioning of its GCRs, as part of the review of the decommissioning files submitted at end of 2022. Decommissioning of the reactor vessel is currently scheduled to begin around 2033. The overall decommissioning time communicated by EDF is estimated at 50 years. Placement and maintenance in a secure configuration of the reactor vessels Conservation of reactors pending Operating Experience Feedback for the Chinon A2 pilot project • End of decommissioning excluding pressure vessel • Maintenance and repair work to ensure the durability of reactor buildings • Removal of the fuel from the facility has significantly reduced the risks.
